Museum of Kyiv is a museum of the history and modernity of Kyiv which offers collections and exhibits that take visitors to go across time and cultures from the ancient period to the modern. The museum hosts permanent and temporary exhibits, different cultural events like master-classes, lectures, etc. The museum is about the whole life of Kyiv in one place.

Challenge

The main task was to develop visual representation that reflects the museum essence and helps to enlarge its audience.

Achievements

Logo and Identity

The museum's essence to connect the past, present and future of the city in one place inspired the idea of time as a main feature of the concept. Basically, there are at least 4 theories for how time runs. It was believed that time was just cyclical a long time ago — life was marked by the repetition of seasons, life and death. However, that's not entirely true because we learn from experience of past generations and we progress. Also, we continually come back to things to rethink or realize them deeper by going down to the past rounds of time. Thus the metaphor of time "time is a spiral that expands constantly" became the central symbol of the visual identity.

Doing research I defined that the museum is about growth and development. Also, to characterise the museum I determined three keywords that helped me to work on visual style: relevant, intellectual, accessible.

I developed the type part of the logo which retains the metaphor and museum's feature. Details of the letters repeat the shape silhouette of expanding spiral what speaks about growth and flexibility.

The primary colours of the identity are black and light grey. However, for communication, the secondary colours in the visual identity derive from things inside the museum. I selected a number of most representinve things and extracted colours from there.

The spiral got used as the main element that can help to brand any item. It makes visible the museum among the other museums and defines the unique style of the it. Also, to implement easily the design I developed a grid layout that can be supported without any difficulties.
